Fenty Beauty

Guys it’s finally here!

Fenty Beauty. The Highly anticipated Makeup line from Rihanna.

Said to have been in the works for the past two years, with Rihanna involved in every aspect of production.

“Fenty Beauty was created for everyone: For women of all shades, personalities, attitudes, cultures, and races. I wanted everyone to feel included. That’s the real reason i made this line.” – Rihanna

Backed by Kendo. If you are unfamiliar with them, they are basically a powerhouse. Backing brands like Marc Jacobs Beauty, Kat Von D Beauty, OleHenriksen and Bite Beauty.

I feel like this alone gave the anticipated line some hope. I can’t be alone when I say that after hearing that Rihanna was launching a makeup line, I rolled my eyes and uttered some choice words under my breath. Following releases like Kylie Cosmetics and KKW Beauty- I felt like this was another celebrity with no Beauty Background slapping their name on a product. If you brought yourself to try out any of the afore-mentioned lines you can likely understand the assumption that this line to would be garbage.

Regardless I felt intrigued by this one and decided to give it a go.

Launch day I strolled into my local Sephora and attempted to weed through the sea of people to catch a glimps. I swatched one very yellow highlighter and was underwhelmed. I decided not to stand there and wrestle people in attempt to swatch any more of the collection and called it a day.

I continued to see good reviews of the line over the following few days and decided it was worth another glimps.

I was going in mainly to swatch the foundations. The Reviews have been really great and I was in need of a new one. Slightly hesitant. The foundation is said to be Medium to full coverage with a soft matte finish. Given I have dry skin, matte finishes are typically not ideal for me. They tend to cling to dry patches and enhance my skins texture.

I Picked up the shade 190 Neutral. It has a slight yellow undertone to it. A ton of the reviews claim the foundations oxidize and it was suggested to pick up a shade lighter than you would typically get. I opted to do so, and pick up a shade slightly lighter than my skin tone. The undertone of the foundation did not alter on my skin at all, It did however dry down darker on my skin than it looks when initially applied.

The PRO FLIT’R Foundation is said to give the skin an instant smooth, pore-diffused finish. It is made with climate-adaptive technology that is both sweat and humidity resistant.

The coverage is beautiful. It feels light weight and comfortable. I applied it with a flat top kabuki brush and liked the way it looked. I was very diligent in my skin prep before application, knowing it might not pair well with my dry skin. I wore it for about 11 hours day one and the longevity is amazing. It didn’t shift or settle. It did enhance my dry areas slightly, but this is not out of the ordinary for me. It doesn’t finish as matte as I expected, but rather gives more of a natural skin like finish. I found it skipped on areas of my skin, so I still have some playing around to do, in hopes that can be avoided.

I was not a fan of any of the cream sticks in the line. They either felt quite dry on the skin when swatching them or were to glittery for my personal taste. The Highlighters, both the individual or duo compacts were far more glittery than I tend to like. The Duo’s all seem to offer one shade that is quite chunky in texture and I personally prefer a more natural highlighter.

I did however pick up the universal glossbomb. This shade is so beautiful. It has a rose undertone with subtle hints of gold. Super comfortable to wear. Not overly sticky. It’s so pretty worn alone or paired with a lipstick.

Over all , the two products I tried I quite liked. The foundation is nice and I will continue to wear it. Do I think it is the best foundation I have tried, no. But It looks really nice on the skin and so far I’m pretty happy with it. I do believe this will wear better on normal to oily skin but if you have dry skin I would be sure to really prep and moisturize really well before application.

Lengthy Lashes with Noir Interdit

IMG_20170824_133730_244The newest innovation in mascara, Noir Interdit by Givenchy.

It offers an innovative 90 Degree bendable brush. Allowing you to target your lashes from all angles.

It gives your lashes a false lash effect, coating them from root to tip. It offers a unique stretching formula giving you lengthier lashes, without compromising the volume.

Givenchy was kind enough to send this out to me to try and after using the formula over the last few weeks I have really come to love it. I’m generally partial to a larger wand when It comes to my mascara, so this took a little getting used to. It really does an amazing job of separating and coating my lashes. Creating a ton of length and definition. The bendable brush is ideal for coating the top of my lashes, which I always do! It is also great for the lower lash line.

The formula does have a little bit of a fragrant smell to it, but It is not something that would stop me from using or purchasing the product

If you have natural length to your lashes, and you are looking for a mascara to enhance that and add definition I would absolutely recommend this product.

It is available in Black and retails for $38.00

Summer Tints with Pixi

Who doesn’t love an effortless summer makeup?

It’s hot, the sun is shinning and all I want to do is be outside. Soaking it all up. The days don’t last long enough and the season is over before we know it. For this reason i’m looking for something effortless for day-to-day wear.

Pixi By Petra launched a line of GelTint and Silk Glosses along with Sheer Cheek Gel’s.

These have quickly become a few of my favourites. The Sheer Gel Blush is beautiful. Easy to apply and just adds a natural flush to the cheeks.

The Gel Tint & SilkGloss is a Long-lasting lip tint, that gives a beautiful stain to the lips. It is infused with Jojoba oil for maximum hydration. They are meant to wear layered or separately if you prefer.

The Cheek Gels are available in three shades

Natural-  A dusty Rose tone. This shade is very natural , as it’s titled. It gives a very subtle tint to the skin.

Rosy- A reddish toned tint.

Flushed- A deep Plum/wine toned tint.

I apply with my fingers typically, but would also apply nicely with a stippling or duo fiber brush. The formula is light weight. I don’t find it to be tacky or sticky as some cheek tints can be. These are very sheer. Again giving the face a natural tint versus the more pigmented wash of colour cream blushes would provide.

The GelTint & SilkGloss

Available in three double shades. These set on the lips as more of stain and are paired with a gloss as a top coat. Super comfortable to wear.

Beachtint & FreshGloss- a Deep burnt tone with an Orange toned gloss

PinkTint & SilkGloss – A bright Fuchsia with a soft pink toned gloss

BerryTint & SweetGloss- Soft Plum toned tint with a muted pink gloss

I do find I need to re-apply during the day. Be it the tint portion of the gloss for more colour or just adding the sheer gloss over top for more shine.

The New Urban Decay Naked Heat Palette

It is the palette of the moment. And for good reason.

I was hesitant to pick up the new Urban Decay Naked Heat Palette. There was a lot of talk about this palette and a ton of controversy. But I went against my better judgement and Ordered it anyways. In the past I have purchased Naked Palettes and have been slightly underwhelmed by some of them.

I actually really love this one. The new Naked heat palette is proving to be the best Naked palette to date, at least it my opinion. It is made up of 12 warm toned eye shadows. With a good range of both Matte and shimmery finishes.

I have been wearing this non stop since it arrived. The colours are beautiful. The fall out is minimal. They blend beautiful and wear really well.

Below are some swatches of the palette and some of the ways I have been wearing it!

It retails for $66.00 CAD

CLARINS| Hydra-Essentiel Silky Cream

I have absolutely been flooding the blog with skin care over the past few months. But I Can’t stop buying it.

I have a love for skin care and I don’t foresee that changing anytime soon!

I have been using the Clarins Blue Orchid Face Treatment oil for sometime, and I absolutely Love it ( Link to my review is below )

I was on the hunt for a daily moisturizer that would also combat my dehydrated skin.

Given my success with the Clarins oil, I opted to try out one of the lines moisturizers.

They just launched the New Hydra-essentiel Silky Cream, available in both a Normal to combination skin formula as well as the Normal to Dry. It Contains an Organic leaf of life extract, that boosts the skins hyaluronic acid production. It enhances the skins ability to retain water, leaving the skin hydrated and plump.

I love this cream. It feels light weight. Wears well under my foundation. I add a few drops of the Blue Orchid oil to it at night for maximum hydration.

I have only been using this for a few weeks, but at this point I can see myself purchasing this again. My skin feels like its moisture balance is improving, so here is hoping that continues!

Glitter Lids with Stila

Hey guys !

I wore this eye look a while back and never got around to blogging about it. I picked up one of the new Magnificent Metals Glitter & Glow Liquid Shadows from Stila and I’m Loving it.

The formula is amazing. They apply beautifully and the pigmentation is incredible. They have a water infused texture so they dry flat and lay on the lid really well. They don’t crease or get chunky after application

I love having the ability to use a Glitter shadow without the worry of fall out.

They offer a range of 12 different shades. I picked up the shade Rose Gold Retro and honestly have to stop myself from using it daily, because it is just do damn beautiful !

The shadows can be found at your local Sephora, The Beauty Boutique or online at http://www.Stilacosmetics.com

Creative Collaboration

A few months back I had the pleasure of getting creative with a group of amazing women. We gathered to create a series of photos with the emphasis on Makeup looks executed by myself.

I ran the idea by my kick ass friend Jesse of Closett Candyy and as expected, she jumped at the idea. She kindly sought out another model for the photo shoot and brought on the talents of Vanessa Whyte of the Loft hair Studio, to create beautiful hair styles that would compliment the looks. Combine these talent power houses with the incredible Chris from four/19 Photography and we were on our way to something really amazing.

Of course we utilized the talents of Jesse and she took the reigns on all aspects of styling for the day.

I sent the group ideas and inspiration for looks I wanted to create weeks before we got together. This would help Jesse narrow down clothing options and also give Chris an idea of what we would be trying to achieve.

I spend the summer months creating beautiful bridal looks and was itching to do something a little different. We spent the better part of a day at Chris’ home studio creating these images and they are something we are all really proud of. I can’t thank everyone involved enough for rallying behind me to allow me to spend the day being creative and having fun.

Below is a break down on the Makeup and why I decided to execute these looks.

I remember sending inspirational images to Jesse for her look, and I think she was a little surprised I wanted to create something so natural. With all that has been going on in the world of Makeup over the last few years, See; clown contouring, Instagram makeup & the resurfacing of ‘ Baking’. I wanted to shift the focus back onto clean lines & fresh makeup. Clean skin and simply enhancing features.

I think far to often we forget how beautiful natural makeup can be. Don’t get me wrong it takes just as much time, if not more time to execute a clean natural makeup look. But the results are just beautiful. I wanted to focus on Keeping the skin really fresh. Highlighting Jesse’s amazing cheek bones. Her eyes are beautiful and this was always to be the focus for me. I worked with earthy tones and added individual lashes to keep her eyes looking big and open.

When creating the look for Deanna we decided to move in a slightly different direction. I again kept her skin really clean. Limiting my use of powered products to keep her looking dewy. Although I worked with a similar colour palette as I did with Jesse, I added in some gold tones and decided to create a more exaggerated shape. I used a neutral peachy tone on the lips and added the same gold that was used on her eyes, to the centre of her lips.

Look # 2

I decided to shift the focus for Jesse’s second look. I eliminated the use of shadows and opted for a clear eye gloss. I used a wine coloured shadow under her lash line to enhance her blue eyes.

I created her lip colour using the same eye shadow, resulting in an imperfect, stained lip. I then packed the centre of her lips with a gold pigment for added highlight. Jesse has fantastic full lips, the use of a bold saturated tone is always beautiful.

I opted for an exaggerated smokey eye on Deanna. She has really beautiful dark features so I created the look using a variety of plum tones. I shifted gears and created more of an almond shaped eye. I smoked out her lower lash line for added drama. I used a fairly nude colour on the lips and warmed up her cheeks with a peachy toned blush.

Mornings with Garnier

Happy Tuesday!

On a recent trip to Shoppers Drug Mart I stumbled upon some Garnier Products. I have for some time been meaning to pick up the BB Cream from the line, a recommendation from a friend who swears by it. It was on sale ( Bonus ) and thought no better time like the present to give it a go!

The line of BB Cream’s is offered for both Normal to Dry skin and Combination to Oily. I have head better things about the Combination to Oily formula, and Although I’m a little more Dry at the moment, I picked it up.

It is available in two shades; Light/Medium & Medium/Dark

I picked up the Light/Medium but will likely require the Medium/dark as well moving into the summer for application alone or to use in combination with the Lighter shade.

I was able to pick this up for Less than $17.00- which in my opinion is quite a deal for a BB Cream. It’s available in 60ml and you can find it at a number of places, Shoppers Drug Mart, Loblaws and Walmart.

My first impression of this is quite good. I like the formula. It is ideal for mornings when I don’t have a ton of time and simply need something easy and efficient to even out my skin tone. It is super lightweight and does not leave the skin feeling tacky. That is typically my largest issue with a BB cream. The coverage is good. What I would expect from this type of product. It does a great job of covering just enough.
It does really mattify the skin, so I might be open to mixing the formulas ( Both Combination/Oily & Normal to Dry) this might give me best of both worlds. It is said to still offer hydration for the skin and also minimizes the look of pores.

I can see myself purchasing this product again, it is great to have on hand as an alternative to a foundation.

I also picked up a sheet mask from Garnier. I have not seen these in the past and was obviously intrigued. New from the line is the Moisture Bomb. A Super hydrating Sheet Mask that provides instant moisture for softer more radiant skin.

Mask Contains;

Pomegranate extract and Hyaluronic Acid

Apply to the skin and leave on for 15 minutes

This mask was a steal of a deal at $3.50. I was happy with the way my skin felt after using this mask. For the price I will definitely pick up more to get a better idea of the benefits, as it can be a little hard to tell after just one use !

Becca| Aqua Luminous Perfecting Foundation

Trying the Becca Aqua Luminious Perfecting Foundation was like anticipating my morning bowl of fruit loops only to discover we’re out of milk…Pure disappointment.

I was on the hunt for a new foundation. I have religiously been using the Urban Decay Naked Skin Foundation, and I love it. I was after something a little more hydrating and something that offered a little more of a glow moving into the summer weather.

I have eyed the Becca Aqua luminous perfecting foundation in the past and have of course, seen it being used on social media. I should have spent a little time reviewing it, which I generally always do. However I was in need of something and just decided to give it a go.

I’m sorry, for the thrust of negativity, but this is the worst foundation I have ever used.

I love Becca, don’t get me wrong. Anything I have used in the past I have really loved. This however was a huge disappointment for me.

Having spent time now reviewing the foundation, it is apparent I’m not alone in feeling this way. Lets dive into what it is said to do and what I didn’t like about it.

It is said to be a light buildable foundation with a weightless feel and subtle luminosity.

It felt light on the skin, that I will agree. But it was as if I had spent time buffing product into my skin and the result was nothing remaining. It provided such little coverage it was hard to notice a difference with or without the product on my skin.

My first use I decided to apply the foundation with my F80 brush from Sigma. It is a flat dense Kabuki brush, my go to for foundation. I found the product skipped in spots on my skin. Resulting in areas on my face not being covered. I found it difficult to build the product with the brush to create a fuller coverage. It blends and builds really poorly.

I decided to try applying the product with my beauty blender, in hopes this would create a more even application. Like the brush it blended and sat really poorly on my skin. It looked patchy in areas where I attempted to build the product. It sat on the skin’s surface and that is not a problem I typically have with my foundation, especially when using a damp beauty blender.

I gave this about three attempts before calling it quits. I was hopeful this would provide a beautiful lighter weight application with a dewy finish- and although the finish does offer a subtle luminosity it wears horribly on the skin. It is difficult to blend and basically just looked as it I had applied the product on the skin and gave up mid way through the blending process.

Brighter skin with Eminence

I know, I know- It has been a hot minute since I have blogged, sorry for the lack of content. Being super pregnant and really exhausted definitely played a major role in the lack of motivation…

Anyways, Here I am with loads of new reviews for you!!

I recently took the day ( Mothers Day, actually ) To enjoy a massage and a facial at an amazing Local spa. The Annex, I’m talking about you !

I knew going into the facial, my skin is super dehydrated. It is a constant battle I fight. I as you all know, have always suffered from acne prone skin. It has for the last few years been pretty great, but it is always something I’m trying to stay on top of. Because that can change at any minute.

The aesthetician was amazing. Super knowledgeable and really sweet.

I have raved in the past about the Eminence products ( I will link past reviews below ) The products are free of animal by-products, parabens, Sodium lauryl sulfates, mineral oil and harmful colorants and fragrances. They are also hand-made which is incredible.

The Facial was amazing and I was recommended a few products to incorporate into my skincare routine, to help combat my concerns. One of which is dull skin.

I took home the Eminence Stone Crop Oxygenating Fizzofoliant. It is a powder-to-foam exfoliant. Packed with microgreens, Stone Crop, Adzuki powder and Rice flower to infuse your skin with a youthful glow. It is said to remove impurities to reveal a brighter complexion.

I have been using this twice a week and I absolutely love it. It is not super abrasive which is great for sensitive skin. My skin feels amazing after use and it is doing a great job of keeping my skin balanced.  I have used a product similar to this by the line in the past and the powder lasts forever- like it took me well over a year to go through my last bottle. So,  It is totally worth every penny! It was mentioned to me that the key is to keep the product away from any moisture or water directly. So keeping the bottle in the shower is not a great idea..

I have been keeping mine in the box , out of the bathroom in  a dry area. This way I’m ensuring it won’t retain any moisture and I don’t compromise the product!

If you are in the area I can’t recommend this product enough.

CLARINS Blue Orchid Face Treatment Oil

My Day begins and ends with this oil. It was recommended to me by a friend and It has honestly changed everything about my skin.

I have struggled with finding an oil that doesn’t cause me to break out. One that doesn’t leave my skin to oily. One that pairs well with or under foundation. This one does it all.

As part of my morning routine, I add two drops of the oil into my daily moisturizer. It keeps my skin really hydrated but also does not leave my skin looking greasy. It absorbs quickly and my foundation sits like a dream on top of it.

Depending on my skin and it’s level of dryness, I either repeat the same process at night. Mixing a few extra drops into my nighttime moisturizer, or I go in with just the oil all over my face for a ton of hydration.

It is packages in a 30 ml glass bottle. It has a dropper system, which I love. It makes mixing and distribution of the product so easy.

It is said to be a purifying face oil made from 100% pure plant extracts. It soothes and restores dehydrated skin. Rosewood and Patchouli tone and replenish the skin.

It contains a Hazelnut oil, which seals in moisture. So this is ideal on dry and dehydrated skin. It also fights against fine lines.

The only thing that might turn people away from the product is the small. I love it, but it is a little fragrant. So depending on your personal preference it might be a little over powering for you. If you have dry or even normal skin, try this oil. It is so incredible. I’m really happy with it and will definitely continue to purchase it.  I have been using it twice daily for about four months and I have about 3/4 of the bottle left- a little goes a long way!

September 24th, 2016. The day of Beauty.

2016 was for most, not a great year. However when I look back I can’t help but reflect on all the wonderful things that did happened. I spent my summer weekends surrounded by Beautiful souls, celebrating Beautiful moments. It was also my first year working as a contract artist for the amazing One Fine Beauty team. If you are from the Ottawa area there is no question you know exactly who I am talking about. They ooze talent and if you are planning on getting married or have been married, you were likely graced (or will be)with one of them, taking care of all your beauty needs.

Shannon, a talent powerhouse not only owns One fine beauty but is the lead artist. She has a team of super amazing artists working alongside her. In 2016 I was lucky enough to be asked to join them. Giving me the opportunity to take care of request within the Kingston, Thousand Islands and PEC area.

September 24th, 2016 was my second wedding with One Fine Beauty. It was amazing. The Bride & Bridal party were fantastic and made my work experience so enjoyable. We spent the morning at The Waring House in Picton. If you have not had the opportunity to visit, you must. The views were amazing and the location is everything a bride could ask for.

Working with parties who are not from the Kingston area always results in me having the opportunity to work with new talent. Be it Videographers or Photographers, hair stylists.

This wedding in particular was being photographed by the extremely talented Tracy of Grace & gold Studios. Immediately go check out their work, because it will not disappoint.

Below are some of the beautiful images captured that day.

Makeup By yours truly of course.

Herbivore| Blue Tansy

This just might be the greatest mask I have ever purchased. A Ballsy statement, I know.

Spoiler alert, I’m going to talk about Skin Care. Insert your shocked faces here.

My obsession. Skin care, it never tires me. I will forever be trying new things. On the hunt for a new ‘Must have’. I don’t even know how I discovered this product, but am I ever fucking glad I did. Yes I love it so much, it warrants an F-Bomb.

I have seen the Herbivore line at Urban Outfitters. Not typically a place I think to go, when shopping for skin care. But never the less – They carry it. I was always intrigued but skimmed over it while on route to the shoe section, likely. You know, for my 80th pair of converse.

I Think I was researching products containing AHA and or BHA and I was lead to this. The Blue Tansy mask. This mildly smelly, glorious Blue Tansy Mask. Two weeks and I’m in LOVE.

A resurfacing Clarity Mask.

Said to Resurface and Clarify using Blue Tansy ( an essential oil that is often compared to a fine Wine. Extracted through steam distillation) and White Willow Bark. Contains Fruit Enzymes that will gently exfoliate the skin, without being abrasive.

All products in the Herbivore line and not tested on Animals ( Bonus)
This particular product contains absolutely no artificial ingredients, fillers, alcohol,  fragrances, artificial colors, or unnatural preservatives.
Apply a super thin layer all over the face. Leave on for 15-20 minutes, or longer if you feel like letting your hair down and living a little dangerously.
Rinse with warm water and pat dry.
My skin instantly felt smooth. It adds radiance to the skin and left it feeling clarified. It has done wonders for my existing Acne and has absolutely prevented more breakouts. I can tell this already, because up until now I was waking up with new blemishes, daily.
AHA, like glycolic acid or lactic acid) is great for exfoliating the surface of the skin, while improving moisture content. Beta hydroxy acid (BHA, as in salicylic acid) is great for those struggling with acne prone skin and or rosacea. It contains anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.
If you are in the market for a new face mask, seriously give this one a try. I really love it. It is gentle enough that I have used it every other night for the past week, without it stripping or drying out my skin. I will reduce use now to twice weekly, for all of eternity.

Mrs. MacNeil

As a Makeup Artist, it is such a crucial part of our job to be able to bring a vision to life. To step away from what we like and are comfortable with and really understand what our client is looking for. Not only that but to really distinguish what will and won’t work for them. Not all wants, make for the best executions. Not every look will translate well to your client. Every day you are faced with taking a vision and bringing it to life in a way that works specific to them. Taking a group of clients, within a bridal party for instance and creating the same look on each face will become so monotonous. You are in no way working to create what is best for that individual. You are as so many love to call it, executing “Cookie Cutter” Looks. Rinse and repeat Makeup.

Not every one of your clients will want or requires a smokey eye. If they do Great! There are so many variations that can be done in order to best suit them. This is not about creating the same smokey eye on everyone, as if you are painting by numbers.

Not everyone needs a dramatic winged liner. In fact some of the most beautiful looks are done without one. I think so many have become trained to see one type of look, that we have forgotten the power of clean beautiful makeup looks. The looks where skin looks like skin. Where brows are not carved out in the most aggressive and unnatural way. Where we are not all lead to believe it is necessary to contour the shit out of your entire face.

I have had many clients who want all these steps to be taken but have no idea why. They have no idea how some of these steps will transform their face shape and not always in the most flattering way. We see it and believe it must be for everyone. I can assure you, it is not.

Don’t get me wrong, if needed a natural contour can be beautiful. But can we all just agree its gotten a little out of control?

Let’s cut to why this post started.

This summer I worked with one of the sweetest brides. She was kind and down to earth. We created a subtle makeup look for her big day. She was a natural beauty with flawless skin and wanted something fresh.

I was flooded with thoughts when looking at the images below, because her look was so different from anything else I had done all summer. Not everyone wants something subtle or natural on their big day and that is totally fine!

Wearing a look that leans towards the dramatic side is beautiful. It was just refreshing to see someone who was not afraid to go in the opposite direction. Remembering that minimalism is really beautiful.

Below are a few snaps from that day !
